SIXTEEN

Walmart was their first stop for Laney’s car seat. It wasn’t the cheap one either. It was the nicest one in the store. Carla’s man servant/driver took care of the purchase. He was like all the other drivers: young, gorgeous, well-dressed, and silent. Tanya wanted to make a joke about Carla being surrounded by the perfect men, but she kept those thoughts to herself.

As the man hooked up the car seat like a seasoned pro, Tanya wondered how many drivers Carla had. This was the third one she’d seen. All different, dressed exactly the same, but with different colored skin, different cheek bones, slightly different haircuts, but all short and well styled. Black suit. White shirt. Thin black tie. Black sunglasses. Of all the things that she found strange, the strangest was the efficiency of the man placing the car seat into the car. No instructions needed. He got it in place in seconds and locked it tight, along with a safety check that would have made any paranoid parent relax.

“Alright, how about some greasy comfort food?” Carla said, and touched Tanya’s arm to pull her attention toward her. “Where would you like?”

“This might sound weird, but Burger Boi?” Tanya had a sudden craving for the BacoStacker 3000, named for all the bacon and calories in the burger. As a naturally high-metabolismed twenty-something, Tanya hadn’t needed to worry about a 3,000-calorie burger yet, but her arteries would remember this far longer than her waistline.

Carla’s smile faltered for a moment but quickly recovered before Tanya noticed. “Sounds wonderful. Let’s do drive thru.”

Tanya agreed, not wanting to see her old coworkers. Being with Carla might be awkward with how everything went down at Burger Boi. Tanya climbed into the backseat with Laney and smiled at her happy little girl. Carla got into the passenger seat, the driver got in last.

“To Burger Boi,” Carla said, and the four drove off.

There weren’t many restaurants in town. Burger Boi was one of the few. It was fairly central and not too far from Walmart. The ride there was silent until Laney ripped the loudest fart Tanya had ever heard. She laughed at first, but when the smell followed, all the funny was choked out of her. It was eye-watering, and led to the driver opening all the windows a little. Tanya pressed the button to open her’s more, but it didn’t move. The window was locked.

“Oh, Laneybug, that’s horrible.” Tanya waved at her baby to clear the air, but it spread the stink more. “I think I need to change her. I’ll just run in.” As much as she hated the idea, it seemed unavoidable now, and who knows, maybe it wouldn’t be that awkward. Carla glanced at her driver, who kept his eyes on the road. She nodded. He nodded in return.

“Diapers are in the back. I was bringing you some supplies when I stopped by,” Carla said with shallow cheer.

“Thank you.” Tanya smiled and leaned toward her window to get some fresh air.
